This CPD day equips you with essential knowledge to modify and safely support pregnant women in your classes. Explore pregnancy physiology, navigate asana and pranayama safely, and refine teaching approaches based on evidence-based guidelines.
Aims of the Morning
- To gain an understanding of the changing physiology of pregnancy as it relates to Yoga.
- To explore asana and pranayama safely in the context of pregnancy.
- To discuss Guidelines for teaching Yoga to pregnant women with reference to the available evidence.
- To clarify understanding of the principles of teaching Yoga to pregnant women
Objectives
- Discuss which postures and practices are beneficial in pregnancy and why.
- Understand what practices should be modified and in which contexts avoided in pregnancy with reference to specific conditions e.g. pelvic girdle pain.
- Advise on use of props and supports where appropriate e.g. use of Stability/Gym ball.
- Practise Breath awareness and pranayama practices appropriate for pregnant women.
- Discuss and practise "grey” areas e.g. squatting, inversions, wide standing postures.
- Access and apply the principles of safe practice within the context of specific Guidelines.
- Deepen their understanding of the value and benefits of relaxation in pregnancy.
Additional Information
Having trained initially with the Sivananda School in South India in 1995, The Active Birth Centre and the British Wheel of Yoga, Judy has been studying and working with students of Vanda Scaravelli for over 30 years - an approach that is particularly suitable for the pregnant body.
In addition to teaching a range of classes, Judy is Lead Tutor for the Yoga Scotland 500 hour Teacher Training course in Edinburgh and a BWY Module Provider for the Pregnancy and Postnatal Modules. She has also spent many years working as a nurse and midwife, and has always had a deep interest in movement and the ease with which movement can be facilitated for everyone.
