Description

When we practice Yoga, we are challenged to acquaint ourselves with our bodies in many ways. Often there is a perceived notion that it is the asana itself that is the challenge. In this class I will be arguing that this is not the case. It is how we notice ourselves while moving towards the asana that is significant. This in turn inevitably has an effect on the mind. As we become absorbed in our practice the mind, because it is of the body cannot help but become quiet too.

This will be an experiential approach to asana work; it will be slow, attentive and thorough.

This session will be approximately 90% practice.

About Peter

Peter started practising yoga seriously in 1978 as a student of the Iyengar system and after six years undertook the two-year teacher-training programme, qualifying in 1986. He continued in this system for a further four years.

From 1987-1993 Peter studied Osteopathy at the College of Osteopaths at Regents College London, qualifying in 1994. During this period he met Mary Stewart who became a significant influence on his teaching style moving away from the Iyengar model of teaching towards an approach that was more influenced by the work of Vanda Scaravelli.

From 1995 he co-ran a two-year teacher training course with John Stirk and Sophy Hoare, while teaching anatomy and physiology at the Chiron Centre for Body Psychotherapy in Ealing. This was followed by another two-year training course.

In 2002 he became involved in the British Wheel of Yoga (the governing body in England), and ran a two-year teacher training programme for them.

Although Peter no longer trains teachers, he continues to explore ways to make yoga accessible and relevant to practitioners in the 21st Century. Over the last fifteen years he has contributed to various teacher training courses both in the UK and abroad, but his central interest has been the development of his humanistic yoga courses which aims to understand yoga from modern understandings of neurology, psychology and biomechanics.
