Description

The Feldenkrais Method® is a unique approach to learning about ourselves through the medium of movement. It was developed by Ukranian/Israeli engineer and physicist, Moshe Feldenkrais, during the mid 20th century. Having had a serious knee injury as a young man, he later began using his scientific knowledge along with his skill as a Judo practitioner to find ways to move which put less strain on his knee. Over many years, he drew on other disciplines to develop his method, which aims to find more efficient ways to move and ultimately, to increase our potential as human beings.

Feldenkrais discovered that by bringing a refined quality of attention and playful curiosity to doing specifically designed movement sequences, students could experience profound changes in their self-image (our internal sensory picture of ourselves) which resulted in them being able to more with greater ease, less pain and increased vitality.

People with existing skills such as in music, acting, horse riding or yoga often find that their practice is deepened and expanded by using the Feldenkrais Method. The method is taught both in group lessons (Awareness Through Movement) and one-to-one, using hands-on (Functional Integration).

This workshop will introduce some of the basic ideas of the Feldenkrais Method. As you are led through carefully designed movement sequences you will be guided to pay attention to how you move. Along the way you will uncover unconscious patterns of holding and discover how to let them go, and so to feel greater comfort and freedom throughout your whole self.

Jackie Adkins is a Feldenkrais practitioner with over 30 years experience of movement teaching. Having initially studied and taught dance, she qualified as a Feldenkrais Method practitioner in 2002. She has taught widely in community and educational settings in London, Scotland and the South-West of England. For 7 years she taught movement for acting students at Bath Spa University. She lives in Frome, Somerset, where she has been for 10 years and runs her Feldenkrais practice. As well as classes in Frome, Jackie teaches workshops in Bristol and Frome, and online classes.
